Industry News: NetApp, Inc. has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire SolidFire, Inc. for $870 million in cash.

The acquisition of SolidFire by NetApp should come as no surprise to anyone in this industry. NetApp’s FlashRay, an internally developed product, has been in development for 3 years and has yet to deliver a competitive product. Even the VP in charge of the product, Brian Pawlowski, has left NetApp for greener pastures.

The question now is, what will become of SolidFire considering that NetApp has well known issues integrating acquired companies into their product lineup? If NetApp is able to integrate this product into their lineup, it will fill a gap in their portfolio with a technology that can compete in the current all flash array market. If history holds true, this may be the last we see of the SolidFire product.

More information on this acquisition can be found in the StorageNewsletter.com press release
